Recently Voice spoke about how we will be striving to bring New Westminster some fresh and talented school board trustees and city councilors. Candidates who are not beholden to special interest groups but whose primary focus is putting the community's interests first and foremost. Well, one of our 2008 Voice School Trustee candidates, Maylen Crespo, was recently honoured with an award for her contributions to community life.

Congratulations to Maylen. Maylen represents the best qualities in people. Her award is well deserved.
Notice how the Record omitted to say that Maylen was a Voice candidate in the election? if this was a negative thing, that would be the first thing that was pointed out in the Record, whose bias is evident in every edition.
Maylen, your award is well deserved! You are a credit to the community of New Westminster.

I agree that omitting to reference Maylen's involvement with Voice shows a bias by the Record. It is something that I have noticed before. Thank you for raising the issue. Whenever the subject of slate politics is covered in the Record newspaper, it is portrayed as a negative. Voice is always identified as a slate but the Labour Council slate is never identified as slate. Ironically, Voice was formed to offer an alternative slate to that of the Labour Council. If the paper wants to be more credible in its reputation, it should be consistent about how they report. If they identify Voice in a story with a negative reference, they should identify Voice when the reference is positive.
Getting back to the good news post though, I would like to congratulate Maylen on her award. I met her and voted for her and would vote for her again. I also hope that she will run for school trustee again! Thank you for your dedication to community Maylen!
Great to hear people like this being rewarded for their efforts. Doesn't happen nearly often enough. It's such a revolving door with school trustees that it really takes someone special to garner the attention of the public, and Maylen has done the job. Well done.
To New Westminster Condos:
Isn't the problem that the majority of trustees have been in their positions too long and haven't moved on? The revolving door you talk of has become stuck. SD40 needs to have an old BC Place revolving door that spits you out after you've been there too long.
Crespo sounds like she could have been some fresh blood.
