What to do with Metro Vancouver's Waste??

Every year, Metro Vancouver residents and businesses generate:

  • 440 billion litres of liquid waste; and
  • 3.6 million tonnes of garbage and recyclables (”solid waste”)
Throughout April and May 2008, Metro Vancouver will hold a series of public meetings across the region to hear citizen’s comments. To see where and when you can attend one of these meetings check their site.

This is a process which is worthwhile participating in. Metro (GVRD) has demonstrated that their consultation is a good vehicle for two way conversation. As we have become aware, the solid waste may have great repercussions for New Westminster, particularly the Sapperton area. Despite denials from the Mayor, New Westminster has been persuing the solid waste component for Metro.

This group seems to think that no matter how good the technology is there are health risks with the incinerator idea.

One thing I know is I don't want any rude jakebraking truck drivers bringing the region's garbage in through Sapperton. We have enough of a problem here with trucks who ignore our bylaws regarding jake brakes.

The problem with the idea of "waste-to-energy" is that people become less concerned with recycling and just toss recyclables in the garbage. Municipalities also don't focus on recycling programs as they have an agreement to provide "fuel" for this machine and the parent company that they have an agreement with.

See the Record's Breaking News section. Hmmm, and our mayor didn't know anything about this?!?!?!
Yet he asked Ms. Spitale to visit facilities in the UK while on holiday!?! Harper just happened to be "visiting" his son and was asked to stop by facilities in Japan?!
What a joke!!!
Come clean!!!
